He is the grandson of the Late Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, who was a legendary actor and former chief minister or Andhra Pradesh. He is fondly called as Tarak by his family, friends and close associates. Rao was born and brought up in Hyderabad; his parents are Harikrishna Nandamuri and Shalini. He went to Vidyaranya School in Hyderabad, and later to St Rakesh's Junior College. He has a sister and two brothers, Kalyan Ram and Janaki Ram. His uncle Balakrishna Nandamuri is also famous actor. A reputed Kuchipudi artist, he started as Lord Rama, a role patented by “The Legend”, & took Telugu Cinema into avenues never ventured before with his record breaking Aadhi and Simhadri. His Rakhi drew admirable reviews from fan and critic alike, wonderstruck with the scintillating beauty of his performance. No wonder,he is considered "The Legend in the making". Rajamouli, followed by Subbu and Aadi. In January 2003, Rao's film Naaga performed poorly, even though it was produced by one of India's finest producers, A.M. Ratnam. However, in July 2003 Simhadri became the highest grossing film of the year in Tollywood, and made Rao and director Rajamouli household names. His first release of 2004, Andhrawala, did not do well at the box office,though the next film, Samba, did better, and was at the top of the box office for fifty days. In 2005 his two releases, Naa Alludu and Narasimhudu, both did either badly or averagely at the box office.
